Snowy trip to dance class (Very Fun)

Took my girls to dance class about 2 miles from home on the Xtracycle tonight. A few more pictures on flickr.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/55823689@N00/sets/72157623260336649/

Maiden voyage on the Xtracycle with an Endomorph on the front. I have ridden in the snow at least a hundred times with Schwalbe Marathon Winter Tires front and rear. It has never felt this stable on fresh snow.

With just me it was not that big of a deal to have the front slip around a little but with the girls on the back it was always nerve racking in fresh loose snow. Tonight with them on the back and the fresh snow loosely packed down to about 1 to 2 inches the bike was very stable going straight. Making turns I still need to slow way down or the front wants to slide still because of so much weight in the back with two girls.

I plan on getting the Larry tire when the are available again. I think that will help even more.

Chainline/Dish/Spacer Questions

I replaced my chainring on my fixed winter bike and realized that my chainline wasn't exactly straight. The cog was further towards the center of the frame/dropouts than the chainring so the chain was angling in toward the center of the dropouts. I added a temporary spacer to the non-drive side axle just so the chainline stays straight for my commute in tomorrow. The wheel is now off center to the drive side now b/c of this. So my questions are:

1. Am I gonna be ok riding this tomorrow or can I mess something up?

2. I'm guessing that I will need to get some spacers between the drive side of the hub and my cog and then remove the spacer that I put on the axle. The rim was centered in the dropouts before I realized the chainline wasn't aligned...is that correct?

3. How much would a shop charge for this? I kinda wanna drop it off during my lunch break tomorrow and pick it up after work if it can be done for relatively cheap.

Thanks in advance

Cycle Computers

I'm looking to get a wireless computer before spring. Not looking to spend much more than $50. No need to measure cadence. So far I'm looking at:

Planet Bike Protegé Wireless 9.0
http://ecom1.planetbike.com/8003.html
I like all the info displayed at once. Thermometer is a nice feature. I prefer a stem-mount base, which this doesn't have.

Cateye Strada Wireless
http://www.cateye.com/en/product_detail/408
Comparable in features. Stem or bar mount. Have heard good things about Cateye products.

Anyone have any experience with either of these? Any other manufacturers\models I should check out? Thanks for any info.

Epic Designs and Carousel Design Works/Pannier Alternatives

So for off road touring/camping/endurance races a lot of people are forgoing the racks and panniers and using bags that mount directly to the bike. Saving weight on racks and actually panniers that are relatively heavy - because of their internal structures.

The two "big" companies right now are:
Carousel Design Works:
http://www.carouseldesignworks.com/main.html

Epic Designs:
http://www.epicdesignsalaska.com/

They are both made in the US and have some differences but they are both making the same 3 basic types of bags (All Photos From Epic's Website):

Handlebar Straps - to hold a stuff sack/compression sack:

Saddle Bags - even bigger than the Carradice Nelson Longflap:

Frame Bags:

There is even a person on the board here who is starting to make some of these. Pretty great stuff - might be a good alternative to those of us who are touring, but looking to save a few pounds on racks and bags.

Transplant from Phoenix Arizona

Any one ever need any information on Phoenix Arizona or surrounding areas PM. I was car free there for five years. And yes that is one of the best places to ride a bike in the world. Sum it up. Flat, warm, sunny 300+ days, cheap,2 bike coops, bicycle friendly communities (lots of them), Mts and basins outside the limits, good pavement, very few pedestrains, many roads don't have street parking,.25 and .50 mile grids, very few rural roads which allows for decent shoulders on them, and lost of bicycle infastructure.

I am not happy about it took me along time to move away. Not that it is a bad place just too cold. Can't wait to move already.

Will be launching myself in March.

FS: Profile Stoker 26 Bullhorns, Tektro Brakes, Profile Stem

Hey Team,
This is copied pretty much directly from CL but:

I have a Profile Design Stoker 26 Bullhorn/Base Bar, 42cm, 26.0 and Tektro 4.1 Reverse Brake Levers, that I would like to sell as a pair for $55. ($50 BL)
The brakes have a few scuffs on them from resting the bike on the ground and such, but nothing abnormal.

Also, I have a Profile H20 Stem - 80mm, +/- 25*, 26.0 Clamp, 1 1/8 or 1" (adapter included) that I wanted $15 for. ($10 BL)

OR!....$65 for all three. ($60 BL)

I would be VERY interested in trades, most notably an 80mm MTB fork with Canti mounts (something like the Dart 2)...Or for the Stem I would trade for another 80mm (26 & 1 1/8) just with a lot less rise/drop...anywhere between 0-7*

Thanks!

Pug Ride 2/7

Ride started and ended at the Angry Catfish... great place to start/end a ride. We took the creek to Minnehaha Falls, then over the Mendota Bridge to the dirt trail that starts at the Sibley House and runs south along the river...

Starting on the "dirt" trail near Sibley:

It was pretty tough going for a while, and we stopped frequently to ponder the likelihood of improving conditions:

We even had to hike-a-bike for a while:

A highlight of the ride was watching lather.magick do his no-handed, tabletop bunnyhops. These pics don't do them justice... it was magickal:

A few more pics here.

We ended up taking "dirt" to 494, rode under the bridge and took pavement back to the Mendota Bridge and then back to AC. Fun ride guys - thanks for waiting for the slow guy (me).

The ride proved too much pavement for my studded tires. I was missing over 30 nuts from the rear tire (nothing from the newly studded front though), and the screws are pretty worn. Still enough stud left to be useful - I just have to replace some nuts. It was good test. I've always wondered how well they'd hold up to pavement riding. I'm impressed that I didn't get a flat.

Holy crap am I tired.

Story on Kare11 about winter cyclists. Maybe someone u know

http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article ... yid=840289

MINNEAPOLIS -- People may wonder why cycling is popular, even in the middle of winter.

"Just people that don't understand it," Karl Stoerzinger said.

The snow didn't prevent Stoerzinger from riding into work at Freewheel Bike in Minneapolis.

"I bike everyday, I don't drive," Stoerzinger said. "It keeps me healthy, I can eat just about anything I want, it's good exercise and it makes me feel good."

Having the right equipment is important this time of year. Studded tires are key for traction.

"We sell a lot of them, I think this year we've sold more than we've ever sold before," Stoerzinger said.

Bike fenders are a nice thing to have as well. The huge tires featured on the Surly Pugsly bikes can also get you through the elements.

"It's well regarded as a snow bike, a lot of people use that," Stoerzinger said.

Perhaps the most popular path for biking in the cities is the Midtown Greenway.

"It's a great way to see the city," Kevin Ishaug said, owner of Freewheel Bike. "In the winter time you can go places that you normally may not go."

Ishaug opened Freewheel Bike's second location in the Midtown Greenway in 2008. The store is tucked in an old train corridor, not even visible from the street, near South 10th Avenue. Most importantly however, it's located on the nine mile bike path, visible to every cyclist that passes.

"We're embracing the lifestyle of cyclists, we're not going to make millions of dollars selling bikes to these people, we are going to endorse that lifestyle of biking as their lifestyle," Ishaug said.

Sun or snow, the Twin Cities is only getting greener. Ishaug is embracing that.

"Riding a bike is more a lifestyle than it is activity for me, I love the comradery you get, out on a winter morning and seeing a group of people riding bikes to and from work."

78 yr old bicyclist jumped in St. Paul

From Kare11.com

Fuck this noise.

Quote:

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Art Flanagan just wishes it would have been a fair fight.

"Stitches all over up here," says the 78-year-old St. Paul man as he runs his hand across his forehead. "Half my eyebrow is gone."

In a fair fight the former bodybuilder might have had a chance. But not when he was blindsided at the start of his daily 3:00 a.m. bicycle ride by a man swinging a blunt object. Flanagan thinks it was a baseball bat or a lead pipe.

"When he hit me on the side of the head, it was such a powerful blow, that I just fell. The bike and everything went right over."

As Flanagan hit the pavement at Hamline and Minnehaha, the attacker started kicking him. A witness walking his dog told St. Paul police investigators the man then jumped in the passenger seat of a dark SUV and drove off.

Neither victim nor witness was able to give a good description of the assailant.

Police say there's no apparent motive for the attack. Robbery does not appear to be a motivating factor since nothing was taken from Flanagan.

"I don't have any enemies or anything like that," said Flanagan. "I don't know who would do this."

Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Schnell says investigators hope somebody knows. Friday he made a public plea for somebody with information to say "what happened to this man was simply not right and come forward and let us know so we can hold him responsible for this random unprovoked attack."

Schnell said Flanagan is well known by the police officers in his neighborhood for his morning bike rides. They often see him on his route or as he stops for coffee at a gas station.

Flanagan suggests the man who attacked him might be better off in the hands of police. "78 years old don't mean nothing. I've been working out."

Flanagan was a champion bodybuilder in the late 1950s. "I was Mr. Twin Cities," he says as pulls out his black and white publicity stills of a sculpted young man. "I was Mr. Saint Paul. I was Mr. Hercules."

At the time of his attack, the retired church janitor was still taking his daily 3:00 a.m. bike ride for exercise just as he did 50 years ago.

"I would give a thousand dollars see the guy face-to-face right now. I'd take a couple punches at him. I'd fix his face just like he did mine."

No doubt plenty of people who wish Art Flanagan would get the chance.

Fast, fun, forty-five! NO NAME 45 Sunday February 7 2010

Yes, it's the day after Stupor Bowl XIII. Yes, it is going to happen. Yes, it is going to be awesome. I promise that I'm making up for my sneakery last month with a manifest less than 10 stops, less than 10 miles, with no stairs and a traditional manifest. Fast, fun, forty-five! Think of it as a recovery ride for Stupor Bowl.
You know the drill. Bring $5 and a bicycle to the Father Louis Hennepin Bandshell in Pillsbury Park at 6:30 on Sunday, February 7, 2010. You will be given your manifest at 6:45. You will launch at 7:00.

Lake winter boots size 44wide, brand new

OK, so I JUST got my lakes, and I love them, but they throw out my ankles, knees, hips and lower back...just like all 3 other pairs of cycling shoes I've tried. I guess cycling shoes are meant to keep your feet at an abnormal angle, which is the ideal angle for pedaling. Doesn't make sense to me, since I pedal just fine on flat shoes.
I've used them for two days now. My joints hurt, so unless anyone can recommend some insoles that will completely correct the posture, I'll sell them for $250. I payed $269, $300 with shipping and taxes, and I'm told Lake is out of wide ones for the year. Eriks online was the only place I could find them. Even Lakecycling.com was out of the wides.
So if you want them, email me at vulture2600@yahoo.com. If you have ideas on insoles (other than Superfeets) that will return my feet to normal, any ideas are welcome!

Oh, it's nothing, his mom just pulled her gun

I was on my way from making a delivery to stopping at the bank to deposit the money from selling my Masi and a couple other things, and on the block from 28th to 29th I notice that almost _all_ the cars parked on the other side of the street facing north are police officers.

There are some kids standing on the corner looking over at the police, I ask what's happening:

"Oh, it's nothing, his mom just pulled her gun again."

Um...

This is half a block from a school about five blocks from my house. I was kind of liking this neighborhood, too

WTBorrow: Iomega Zip Drive
