Maybe do some kind of a "black mass" ride, everyone in black of some form or another might differentiate it from the critical mass ride and attract the attention of the press in a positive but respectful way.
just a thought.

I am sorry about the false alarm email - I was trying to just get the word out and new that we don't really have many people that check up on the site on Sundays, but might still get email.

I will attend the ride, except for the trip to blaine. Thats too far for me. I think having that stop at the end is a good idea.

I would love to join a memorial ride. These accidents have become far to frequent. I would like to suggest that riders wear the same color shirts (maybe bright green, orange or white?, I would stay away from black, the idea is to be visible). the news is reporting deaths, but I think car to cyclist encounters have become more frequent too and it's important to make a visible display of our presence.

a co-worker witnessed the fatal accident on 5th and Hennepin last week and she said that the police weren't very sympathetic to the cyclist who was killed. She felt that they sounded and acted as though the cyclist was at fault, though she reported that the driver was going too fast. The blurb in the news the following day had the police department stating that cyclists needed to obey all traffic laws (and as far as she could tell, this cyclist was).

How about we do the ride Saturday, October 11 at noon? That gives us enough time to get the word out but is soon enough that people will still remember all the deaths of recent weeks. White t-shirt and/or armband sounds like a great idea since the ghost bikes are white.

Ginny Heuer was a good friend of mine. She was one really amazing person, and the loss is huge and tragic in my community. I would love participate in a memorial ride in her honor, as well in honor of all stricken riders.

Ginny and I had a lot of mutual friends who are avid cyclists, I will contact them and I'm sure they would all love to participate. If there is anything I can do to help bring this about please let me know.

what about saturday, oct 4th in the morning prior to unite bike? were people thinking of a ride to all the sites? or just on summit? what about a summit memorial ride for ginny this saturday, the 4th, while its still in the public view (this tragedy needs to stay in the news papers. people forget so quickly), and a larger ride to all four sites on the 11th?

I do think it's important to do something quickly, before another shiny object takes the public eye – and the eyes of the media – off of this issue.

For those of you who missed the earlier post, here's what Unite Bike is all about:

I think it'd be a fitting gesture to have the ride end up at Gold Medal Park, or at least target it as a stop along the way.

[ehh... note: this is a duplicate. I posted it in viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9548, but it seems to apply here as well...]

So I bought my first road bike ever last night (1984 Schwinn World Sport) and I read about this woman's death in the Strip today over my lunch hour. I am a complete n00b at bikes but my heart goes out to this woman and her family and I for one would be very interested in participating in a ride to memorialize all four dead cyclists (four in a month? really?).

My two cents, everyone on the ride should wear bright reflective clothing -- yellow, green, orange, etc. That would make an impression on motorists and encourage defensive riding at the same time.

Cyclists have to follow safety procedures and make a big show of it if the public's perception is ever going to change. I imagine that Critical Mass, with everyone blowing stoplights, furthers the stereotype of cycling as inherently risky and lawless.

What should the route be? St. Paul to Calhoun area, then to downtown? People that wanted to brave the trip up to Blaine could continue, otherwise it should be easy for most people to disperse from downtown.

Should we try to do tshirts or something to mark everyone as being on the same ride?

Can you send an e-mail to the members when the details are finalized?

in addition to the 4 sites ride...is anyone interested in doing a memorial ride on summit this saturday, oct 4th, meeting at parking lot @ 10am on east river road and summit, riding to the memorial for ginny, then to the cathedral, back again, and ending at the same start point. folks doing unite bike could ride together from there. thoughts?

I think a weekday memorial ride would create more awareness. More drivers on the rides, gives us more attention.

I think it would be too hard to get enough folks out there. Besides the ratio of cars vs. riders would be almost threatening. We should do this but not like a CM ride that pisses everyone off. It should be respectful of the who we are remembering and respectful of everyone else.

If it is on a saturday, I will ride along.
