Deer flies...crap were they bad on the Munger Trail last weekend! Went through an entire tube of repellent (33% deet) in 3 days. If you can't go 14mph+, they will follow you. And they will hitch a ride on your panniers until you stop/slow down enough for them to dive bomb your head/neck. Nearly drove me crazy. I felt bad for the joggers...constantly waving their arms trying to keep the swarms from striking.

Somehow they don't seem to care if you swat/smash them. They apparently can't die or something. I'd smash one and a few seconds later it would come back to life. They're just pure evil.

If the bug dope had any effect, I've seen worse.

Saw this fox from a ways back as it made its way down the W Munger Trail outside of Moose Lake, MN on 2010.07.11.

It looked healthy, so I decided to go for the pic and pass it. Stupid...maybe.

It was startled by my silent approach. As soon as it noticed me, it ran off into the woods.

It is not preparing to lunge at me in this pic. Nor was it threatening. My camera was too slow. Instead of getting a good profile shot, I got the moment it noticed me...

The following day I rode the bypass trail around Moose Lake and saw it sitting in the bushes - maybe a few hundred yards from this location.

That's great! I worry about the foxes these days. With the coyotes becoming a larger presence in the region and all-- they do compete directly for the same resources.

Don't get me wrong, I love to hear them singing on a winter night; but they're a much bigger nuisance than fox, and are more immediately destructive to humans, our property,
and the things we like..

Deer on the Central Lakes Trail between Nelson & Osakis, MN. Taken on Day 1 of the 2010 MS TRAM from the Bird Road bridge that crosses the trail.

Lucky that I had the 300mm lens already on, as it was at least 1/4 mile from the bridge. Even luckier that I got the focus right, as this was my first day attempting to use a "real" camera.

Two nights ago riding with my brother on the Minnesota River Trail along Highway 14 in Mankato, we came up on a deer, and it leaped away so we started riding again. Much to our dismay, to the left of us for the next 1/4 mile was a fence and to the right was highway 14, so we basically continued following the deer. I like deer and everything, I just don't really like following them because I don't want one of them to turn around and annihilate me.

I saw these turkeys on the way home from work. There were at least four of them.

Watch out for his laser red eyes! Saw this little guy two weeks ago on the west side of Cedar Lake.

Stopped on Pohl Road today going uphill to wait for 10 wild turkeys to cross the road. There was a car waiting there too. When the last one got on the curb I looked at the dude in the car and he was smiling, and I laughed and just said, "Alright! Cool!" and continued up the hill.

I've never seen a snapper that small. Did you help it across the path so it can grow into big prehistoric-lookin' monster?

I gave him/her a little toss into the grass. It wasn't clear to me which side it was trying to get to.
