Dumb idea. You figure out why.

maybe not a mob beating. but no i firmly believe this shit head should have gotten his ass beat. if he's not going to serve any time he has to at least be punished. i'm not always a fan of the high road.

WOTF: to the heat and being placed in Shipping and receiving at work for the last two weeks for keeping me from riding in to work. I've been dead tired this whole time.

Well that would be the low road. Maybe now that you know his name you should go over to his house and show him a thing or two.

TOTH to Fluffy_Alabama for riding with me on my AM commute and the ride to the farmers market yesterday. Good (steamy) fun rides!

Forgot to add...

TOTH to Eden Prairie (& other cities) for changing the solid red left turn light/arrow to flashing amber light. This is very helpful on my commute! Instead of stopping and waiting for a car to come along to trip the sensor and allow me to make the left, I can get through the intersection much faster and easier!

Legally, if you've stopped and no one is coming and the light isn't turning, you can cross the intersection.

This doesn't mean you've got a free pass at all times, but if you didn't trip the sensor, you're not actually stuck.

Thanks! I know about the stale red light law and do go on red from time-to-time. But I hate doing it. The flashing amber turn arrow is a vast improvement for me (and the drivers too).

WOTF to Minneapolis (not sure whether it's Public Works or the Park Board) for the beg buttons at several corners along the Minnehaha bike path -- you either have to stop on the wrong side of the path, or go way off into the dirt to reach them.

WOTF to the people who lean on the posts without pushing the buttons.

When they put in the new super-computerized system for traffic control, I'm hoping that they include options like automatically providing a walk signal during high-traffic weekend days.

Quote:
Over the last several years, the City of Minneapolis has been moving forward on a plan to replace its computerized traffic signal system hardware and software. The City has been working with the Federal Highway Administration, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metropolitan Council, Hennepin County and other project partners to secure funding and to identify and design the system components and features for a new traffic signal computer and communication system. ... The project is set to be put out for bids later this year, and work is expected to be complete in late 2013.

WOTF to the trail riding dude in Wirth who zipped out of the woods and across the Luce Line trail at the bottom of the hill near the golf course. Head down, never looking. I didn't even have time to squeak, and I don't think he ever even saw me, before or after. Had he emerged one second later there would have been a memorable t-bone.

That section of the paved trail is actually pretty busy in the afternoons. TOTH to all the cyclists.

WOTF to the news people making everyone so scared of the heat .... therefore if I ride my bike home from work at 4:30... I will die. Knock it off! No, it's not safe for everyone, but health/fit people that bike all year round will be OK.

I sit in an AC office all day long, drink lots water, then bike home... my commute is under 10 miles. With this heat, I take a more mellow route (fewer hills & more shade), keep a lower tempo and I go through 2 bottles of water during that ride. Honest, I get home and I'm just fine, after just a shower and a cold drink.

How do you deal with the heat while biking? How do you deal with the people that think you are risking certain death in the heat?

I have a short 2 mile into work, 2.4 mile home commute. In this heat I just ride an easy pace. I wear shorts, Lake bike sandals and a white V-neck tee or a wicking Jersey. It's no big deal. It's probably less hot than driving my old, no AC, car. Plus, if you commute every day, I think your body acclimates to the weather.
Personally, I think the challenge is more mental than physical and the News stories certainly don't help the mental challenge. So just ignore the news, naysayers, and just ride at an easy pace.
Bill.

There's a reason the media has pumped up the fear factor to 11.
Heat waves may seem not terribly dangerous, they actually are quite deadly, especially in certain demographics.

The fatalities are mostly poor, socially disconnected elderly people. So check on your older neighbors and relatives, especially those without A/C.

"in the United States, the loss of human life in hot spells in summer exceeds that caused by all other weather events combined, including lightning, rain, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes."

Anyone can still get heat exhaustion, so take it a little easy out there, and hydrate appropriately.

I know I've had it a couple times, and I've seen in other fit, athletic people and it's not pleasant.

I agree with what your saying - this is an important message for all of the biker. I have hit heat exhaustion and passed out from lack of hydration. It sucks! You must be smart in this heat, especially if you are exerting yourself.

I just get offended by the news making is sound like it's deadly dangerous for EVERYONE. The heat can be deadly, and we all need to pay attention, but simply biking isn't going to kill a health/fit person.

They are rebuilding the street in my neighborhood, the crew is out in this heat ALL day and they are working HARD! People all around the city work outside in this heat all day long. With proper precautions, I can safely bike for 45 minutes.

Funny thing, shortly after posting this, the news did put on a doctor with sound advice. If you're fit & health, you can continue to work out outdoors in these conditions with proper precautions: extra hydration, pace yourself, and don't try to break any records. Exactly my point!

Be smart and safe and enjoy your bikes!

I commuted home at a bit before 5 and it was a lovely ride.

I took it pretty slow but I think what really helped was getting my buff wet before the ride and dropping three cubes of ice into the tail and tucking it so it hung near the nape of my neck/lower skull.

Downright pleasant.
