For those of you that haven’t heard this yet, I’m looking for community impact statements related to the assaults that have occurred on the Greenway including the recent “U- Tube” assault. It appears that the suspects will be going to trial soon. We want to let the judge know just how serious the impact of these assaults has been on each of you personally as well as it’s impact on the future of the Greenway. You, don’t have to describe specific incidents you’ve witnessed, unless you’d like to of course. We want the judge to understand impact the assaults have had on cyclists using the Greenway. Please get them to me as soon as you can. Thanks. Don Greeley Crime Prevention Specialist 3rd Prec. CCP/SAFE Minneapolis Police Dept. 3000 Minnehaha Ave. Mpls. Those are the people the court needs to hear from when the try these cases. I appreciate your help in getting the word out. Thanks. So, for those of you concerned... Name and numbers are above. Thanks. I did send an impact statement. I haven't stopped using the Greenway, but when I decide whether to ride in the evening, the assaults really weigh on me. We've skipped a lot of nice riding days -- tying up space on the roads and polluting the air, and piling on fat that will bankrupt the health care system -- just because of worrying about armed thugs jumping out from behind bridge pillars. It spoils the fun of riding, and it adds costs for me and the community if I'm scared off from biking on the Greenway.

Thanks HNT - I got the same email, and will respond. I think we all need to think about things. I won't stop riding the trails at any point for crap like this, but we all need to be aware of what is going on. Too many people are getting mugged for basically nothing - bikers rarely carry much cash, and credit cards and cell phones can be stopped quickly with little impact. It costs more to get stitches than many bikes are worth.
The real impact is from people who worry and tell others - I have heard that the Greenway is not safe from a couple of bike shop OWNERS - they need to be aware that their clients ride the path often, and it does no help their sales if people do not feel safe riding.
All -please join with the coalition and help get the buddy system set up. The best way to avoid these things is to be in groups - my daughter will be out there on the trails, and I need to make sure she and her friends are safe. If everyone thought about each other a bit more, we could do away with these things.

I was biking the Greenway the other night, and saw a man walking in my direction.
I sped up to 18 mph or so as I passed him, feeling a little wary.
As I passed him, I heard him great me with a simple "peace".
That's what these asshole thugs do -- they destroy friendly interactions with strangers and replace them with distrust.
