Very sad news. http://www.startribune.com/local/west/149036135.htmlQuote: A car ran over and killed a 17-year-old boy on a bicycle in Minnetonka, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday on Shady Oak Road near Excelsior Boulevard, according to police.
The boy was leaving a parking lot into the southbound lanes of Shady Oak, when he was hit, police said.
There is no indication that alcohol played a role in the crash.
The boy's identity has yet to be released. This is very close to Tonka Cycle. Please post if you see any additional information.

KSTP has a rather different story since they interviewed the police on scene. http://kstp.com/news/stories/s2597010.shtmlThe bicyclist was trying to cross the southbounds to turn left and was hit. Not wearing helmet.

People drive on Shady Oak road like it is a highway all the time. This is very sad this happened.

I do not want to blame the kid, but I wonder if he had lights; 8:45 is dark. I would like to see these reports talk about lights, not helmets. A helmet would not have offered this poor kid any help (he was run over). Lights may have helped avoid the accident - that's better than a helmet any day!

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often in the suburbs. The few times I leave mpls I can tell the difference in driver's bicycle awareness/acceptance.

This sucks. I live right by there (west side of Shady Oak Lake) and that stretch of Shady Oak just North of Excelcier sucks. They put in a bike-walking path on Shady Oak between Excelcier and 62, but there are a bunch of places to go (Mtka Cycle and Ski, Lehman's Liquor, etc....) just North of there, and the path ends. I often see people use the northbound "exit" off the SW LRT and cross Excelsier going North on the trail side, but the trail ends so they end up biking up Shady Oak into traffic going North from Excelsier. It isn't a very well thought-out area in regards to pedestrian and bike traffic.

One small lapse of concentration is all it takes. I see it everyday, but the consequences aren't as bad. Normally it's forgetting to add something to the pan or forgetting my phone.

It's a busy intersection that I cross regularly both by car and bike. I went by there last night at about the same time as the accident and it's quite dark with lots of traffic from all 4 sides. News vans were across the street and the parking lot of the church was full for the pray service. Very, very sad.

I hate the intersection on my bike. It really bothers me that they just rebuilt Shady Oak south of Excelsior and did such a terrible job of making it bike/ped friendly. Example, I'm exiting the LRT and want to go north on Shady Oak, either use the MUP on the west side (against traffic) or go across a businesses lawn, into their parking lot and then on to northbound Shady Oak on the road (without shoulder/bike lane). Complete Streets is a great idea, but it's not getting to the finished projects.

Strib reports no lights, riding against traffic when hit. He had the standard bicycle reflectors but no lights and was not wearing a helmet, said Police Capt. Scott Boerboom.
He also was riding against traffic heading north in the outside lane of the two southbound lanes, Boerboom said. Bicyclists are supposed to ride in the same direction as traffic, he said.
The captain added that there also is a sidewalk available to bicyclists and pedestrians. From " 'Bad timing' cost cyclist his life in Minnetonka" Ugh. So many things wrong. I wouldn't blame bad timing. Bicyclist should have had a front light. And shouldn't have been riding against traffic. But at the same time, the existence of a nearby sidewalk does not necessarily create a alternative safer path. Nor does the lack of a helmet mean the fatality was his fault.

+1 to people somehow suppressing the urge to chime in with "wasn't wearing a helmet" without any knowledge of whether the injuries even included a skull fracture (the only injury that a helmet has even a chance of preventing.)
Let's leave that to the Star Tribune, which seems be mainly interested in whether the driver was drunk or the cyclist wasn't wearing a helmet.
