Some bikers don't use lights; some don't use helmets. Is there a useful and positive way to implore the importance of using them without it turning into a political discussion on the greenway of how "in America I have the freedom to bike without a light .... forefathers .... Obama ..."? *please note the use or sarcasm above.

It's a mistake to look only at the price of one part of a transportation system. The amount I pay in total for transportation is considerably less than that typically payed by folks who choose to own and drive cars.

The idea isn't so much to teach people that lights make them more visible or that it gets dark at night.
Rather, the idea is to convince people that they [i]want[/] to be visible at night.
It's not a rational argument, as the rational choice is clear. It's an emotional argument.

i think im going to buy a super high powered light out of spite. i flipping cant stand it as all these peeps keep their lights at a zillion lumens as they're oncoming and passing me within a few feet on the trails.
i have a planet bike blaze that ill use on dark sections of trail, and ill use my hand as a shield to keep it out of oncoming faces. and its not even that bright. i also have a little USB owleye thats helmet mounted that ill look down and to the right as i pass people too.
what the point is of having your lights on megatronfullblast and spotting other oncoming cyclists grillz ill never know. but i do know once the price drops a little bit more ill be mounting one on my helmet. and just turning it on to shine in the faces of people doing it to me. hopefully we can both be blinded after passing each other and do our best not to crash. whoot whoot!!!

I've almost run into ninjas riding on the Greenway. I want to make sure I can see riders without lights. That's the main reason I got my Sunburn 5000. I don't want to blind anyone but I really want to know who's in front of me.

A while ago I semi jokingly proposed "bike lights for hipsters" similar to bike cops for kids. A keg benefit where the proceeds go to buying cheapass knog lights to distribute isn't a horrible idea.
Sounds a lot better than picking bits of broken douchebags out of my tires and spokes because I rolled over them.

*please note the use or sarcasm above. An important distinction between helmets and lights is that the law requires lights, but not helmets. Therefore to wear a helmet or not is a personal choice and bla bla bla [insert helmet debate]. Lights are the law, which means that you can (and should) get hassled by cops and ticketed for not having them. That alone should be enough to encourage some people to use them. No one drives around without their car headlights on unless they want to get busted fast. But its also not really fair to just start handing out tickets when a lot of people probably don't know that lights are required by law, so that's where the PSA comes in. I think the snowplow death - which seems like it could be attributed to lack of lights as a large factor - should encourage stepped up awareness and enforcement.

If it is a law way can't the bikes be sold with a basic light when you buy a car you get all the equipment that is needed for it to be street legal. Why can't this be true of bikes?
