Gene Hackman hit by a car By Anna Chan Actor Gene Hackman was airlifted to a Florida hospital on Friday after being hit by a car as he was riding his bike in the Florida Keys. Hackman's rep told TMZ that the 81-year-old actor "suffered bumps and bruises after a woman bumped him from behind in her vehicle," but that he is "fine" and has already been released from the hospital. His rep also told E! News that the Oscar winner was airlifted to the hospital "for routine tests" because he was on an island when the accident occurred. According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened just before 3 p.m. on the Old Highway in Tavernier, Fla. The impact knocked Hackman off of the bicycle. I'm confused. I'd expect a someone like Hackman to draw enough attention to the incident alone. Why try to spark controversy?
But for reals, he got airlifted for bumps and bruises, now that's money.

As beautiful as they are, given the reputation they have, I would NEVER ride a bike in the Keys. Every story I've ever heard about biking down there was dominated by fear or injury.

But for reals, he got airlifted for bumps and bruises, now that's money. I just like how it is mentioned casually in the article. It doesn't help me set the stage or identify the driver. Had they said "black driver" it would have been called racist, but needlessly identifying the driver's gender is fine. It only became controversial when I pointed it out. Anyway, that is the kind of thing that entertains me after a few beers.

Gabriel I've ridden a both a bicycle and a scooter on Key West. So you now have to say "All but one of the stories I've heard was...."  It was OK. We were there in January a few years ago so there weren't any concentrated groups of partiers and most of the people were pretty mellow. That said, we were still extremely cautious seeing that we didn't know the island well, had no helmets, and the bikes were kind of sucky. Had it been a week full of spring break or pride (which I am told is insane) we'd have stayed off anything with 2 wheels.

I think the optimal situation for traffic trouble is a 50-50 mix of people who shouldn't be driving anymore and people who are acting stupid. I only had the former on my trip. I should have made that more clear.

Actually, most of the stories I've heard are about people touring down there, and giving up after they've gone half-way because they got tired of ditching off the side of the road every two minutes to avoid being hit by drivers, having to move out on to the road to avoid obstructions on the (very narrow) shoulder every 30 feet, or just as often, both.

Gabriel I hear you! I've done the drive twice and my wife just did a Ragnar out over those bridges. There are ones that have bike paths but a couple are just two lanes and the two lanes aren't particularly wide. Despite the incredible beauty, the narrow points and complete lack of shade would make me think really hard about doing that ride.

Again, this is America, so the helmentless Hackman almost certainly committed the hideous crime of somehow being completely and totally invisible because he was riding a bicycle. As we all know, human beings automatically vanish into thin air when they sit on a bike, so it's safe to assume that the driver "didn't see him," or that Hackman "came out of nowhere," or else he fell under any of the other innumerable excuses by which it's perfectly fine to hit someone on a bike with your car in this strange and vexing country of ours.

+1 to NYC Bike Snob.
I've biked in the Keys. One generally gets a dumpy beach cruiser from the resort you're staying at and rides on incomplete paths off to the side of the road. In order to get to the other side of the street you have to execute a hail Mary with highway traffic running 45+ mph.
If you think a helmet is going to help you in that environment you are self deluded. Once again, everybody wears helmets to protect themselves from cars when that is simply not what they are designed for.
Glad that Lex is okay after the crash. Superman would be lonely without him.
