So, I finally bought an expensive-a$$ Chris King headset, but I think it looks like poo. The problem appears to be that the bottom surface (i.e., the surface that contacts the top of the fork crown) of the base plate (race) has a bevel, and as such, it looks like it doesn't sit anywhere near flush to the fork. In other words, a significant gap appears between the headset and fork crown that looks terrible.

See my handy x-sectional drawing of the base plate (dotted line is the fork crown).

Is this how this is supposed to work? Please let me know that I'm just being an idiot, and that Chris King is perfect.

See bottom picture in post #4 on how it looks. http://forums.mtbr.com/general-discussion/chris-king-headset-missing-part-720272.html (different problem discussed in the forum, but the picture is handy)

You faced your fork crown, right?

No, but it is as clean and flat as it gets.

I think I've answered my own question. The bevel on the lower surface of the CK base plate simply gives the appearance of a gap between the fork crown and the base plate -- as seen in plenty of other CK headset installations......

It will probably look better when it is below eye level (e.g., taken out of the stand).

edit: King says fork crown is "not critical-" amazing coming from them. Saves having the facer dulled I guess...

This is so you can get the crown race OFF.

Always always face and chase your frame prior to building it.
There is no argument because it is the right thing to do.
Please do this.

Thanks for all the tips fellas. Atomkinder -- you make a good point. I suspect they started doing this for chubby carbon forks (which would cover the entire rear surface of the base plate, and hence, you need the gap to get it off).

The gap created by the bevel just doesn't look great -- I painted the bottom of it black to look a 'lil better, and it does. I'll be posting the bike on bike porn probably tonight.

Peace.
