We have been increasingly suffering under two problems.
One is the amount of spam user registrations and the spam that they post. It has gotten to the point where we enabled moderation of new users, meaning that an administrator will have to approve new users before they can post. We originally wanted to avoid this because it creates one more hoop for new users and admins.
The other issue is the load placed on our server, some by spam registration attempts and some from crawlers, both legitimate and otherwise. To address this issue, we have installed a piece of software that should throttle those types of requests. Occasionally, they processes can run away, and cause our entire server to go down. To prevent that (which affects other sites we host), we set a limit on the server load. When that limit is reached, the bikelove site is disabled. When we first enabled that limit, we had it set pretty low, but we have increased it. Hopefully, between the increase and the throttling software, the board will not be automatically disabled often or for long.
Thanks for your patience while we get all of this worked out! Bjorn
