Hey - you might want to check out Express bike shop in Chicago - its run by some friends ... PM me if you want a name to drop, and I can give them a call. 3Three3 wrote: Oh Lovely Minneapolis Peeps...how I miss thee.
I'm on the hunt, or rather, the man is on the hunt for a 55/56cm road bike. But...he doesn't know anything about bikes and I'm hella busy with grad school. He's mainly getting it so he can ride with me.
I've spent a fair amount of time hunting stuff here in Chicago, but I'm still unfamiliar with the scene/where to go/etc, and everything I've seen in person or called about has turned to crap. So...
Hopefully you lovely folks keep yer eyes peeled for a simple road bike (no fixies) in good shape with not-complete-shiz components. We'll set the price range at $150-300, with 300 being only for something extra awesome.
I'll be heading to MN in the next month or less and could pick it up then, though payment could be made ahead of time after one of my trust bike friends checks it out.
Thank you!

You may already have more knowledge on the subject, but if not, I'd recommend Sheldon Brown's advice re: tension adjustmentsheldon brown wrote: Tension Adjustment
Most leather saddles have a tension-adjusting nut located under the nose of the saddle. Fortunately, this nut usually requires a special wrench, so most people leave it alone. In almost every case that I know of where someone has tried to adjust the tension with this nut, the saddle has been ruined. My advice is to leave it alone.
If a leather saddle gradually becomes too soft and too wide after many thousands of miles, it is sometimes useful to punch a few holes in the bottoms of the side flaps and lace them together under the saddle frame.
This allows the width and firmness of the saddle to be adjusted to the rider's taste. Some older models came with a row of holes along the lower edge of the side flaps, for this very purpose.
I realize that this sounds like a lot of trouble, but most cyclists who take the trouble find it well worth while--in the end.

What what what?
I second Sheldon's advice. I dont have direct experience, but about a year ago I read enough posts to discourage me from trying.
But let us know how it works!

I have a Brooks B-17 from the 70's. It was well broken in and after many years too broken in for me. I adjusted the tensioning nut a bit to tighten it up a bit. Worked great for me. Why would Brooks have the tensioning nut and the wrench for it if you weren't supposed to use it? Bill.

Yea, I have a b17 that I rode in the rain (uncovered) once (because Im an idiot). It stretched till my ass was riding the rails. That is when it dawned on me that I was riding a leather saddle. In. The. Rain. But hey, some people take a shower with theirs to break it in. However, once it dried out, I used the tension nut and it has become one of my favorite saddles ever. I had it on my KM/29er for a while but an odd jump placed the metal nose far too close to an a certain orifice at high (enough) speed and it was no longer welcome as an offroad trail companion. That and I guess I bent the rails... thank you steel, for your relative lack of fatigue. They bent back fine. Funny enough, the edges they speak of piercing, rolled themselves in towards the seatpost after it got wet. I am noticing my red b17 (which I did not wet conform to my ass and is just now getting really comfy after a few hundred miles/daily riding) flares out at that point and rubs my inner thighs so Ive been considering lacing it... Speaking of - anyone have leather working tools/experience? Id like to modify my B17... rjhammett wrote: I am looking for the adjustment wrench for a Brooks B-17 saddle. If I can find one of my spares, I will give you a such a brooks tension wrench. I have no need for three of them #humblebrag (?). Oh, and proofhide, proofhide, proofhide.

I found what i need, so ignore all this: I'm looking for a road frame for my rain bike. The one I use now is 53cm and I get enough toe overlap to scare the crap out of me. If you want a 53cm Ross Ishiwata maybe we can trade.
Here is what I need:
56 cm frame 700c
Horizontal drop outs bc I'll ride it single speed (fixed actually) Standard road spacing in the rear Fit 35mm tires plus fenders 1" head tube preferred but I'm open Price - between free and $100. The cheaper the better. I have a load of stuff I can trade.
The uglier the better bc I don't want to worry about it.

Dialing in the frame/bike looking for:
50-51cm flat bar road bike, older schwinn in the cross series (criss cross, cross cut, etc.).
Might have brown Schwinn Marada 26" mixte cruiser to trade for it.

Looking for a Stem with a 1.5" steer tube clamp being around 90-100mm in length, for 1997 Cannondale Mtn bike with Headshok MC60. If you know of anything or have any good leads, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
