The thicker chainstays alone are worth it, in my opinion.

I just can't help but think that the O.P. is a viral marketing ploy by QBP/Surly to get a bunch of people saying positive things about their bikes.

I don't own a Surly, but I enjoy that they are a local design, and you ride what cha like. I like certain things in a bike, and that's all I care about - we are a community and all that's required is you ride when you want to, and accept others for their choices. If someone has disposable income and wants to spend it on a bike, don't question their motive if they ride it. A Surly is inexpensive when compared with a decent custom frame with campy components, and they are very nice rides - an $800 bike now is about like a $300 bike in 1980, which was entry level for a decent road bike - you could not buy a track bike for that even then.

Come ride - we have people who are very fast on 50 dollar bikes, and slow on $10K bikes, but we all just ride. Best city in the country to like biking in

I LOVE MY STEAMROLLER HOW DARE YOU TRY TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME.
YOU DONT KNOW ANYTHING. HAVE YOU EVER RIDDEN A STEAMROLLER? YOU MUST NOT HAVE BECUASE OTHERWISE YOU WOULD NEVER SAY THINGS LIKE YOU SAID. I WILL NEVER STOP LOVING MY STEAMROLLER. SO IN YOUR FACE OP. WHEN I BOUGHT IT THE RETAIL WAS $666 AND IVE GOTTEN MY MONEYS WORTH. SO THERE. I USED TO HAVE DROPS ON MY STEAMROLLER, AND NOW I HAVE RISERS. AND I LIKE IT BOTH WAYS. IT ALSO CAN TAKE A WATER BOTTLE HOLDER, CAN YOUR BIKE? MAYBE NOT. ONE TIME I WAS RIDING MY STEAMROLLER AND I SAW SOMEONE RIDING A MAGNA. HE WENT FASTER THAN ME. BUT THEN DIDNT RIDE CIRCLES AROUND ME. MAYBE IT WAS YOU. BUT IF IT WAS YOU, YOU MUST NOT HAVE LOOKED AT MY BIKE. BECUASE IF YOU WOULD HAVE YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN A STEAMROLLER (YES WITH A WATER BOTTLE HOLDER AND WATER BOTTLE IN IT) AND HOW NICE IT LOOKED. AND THEN YOU WOULD NEVER THINK THAT $666 IS TOO MUCH FOR A SURLY STEAMROLLER. I DONT KNOW HOW MUCH YOUR BIKE IS. BUT WHATEVER. IF IT WAS CHEAPER THAN A SURLY STEAMROLLER YOU DIDNT PAY ENOUGH. BECUASE IF YOU WOULD HAVE PAID $666 YOU COULD HAVE GOTTEN A SURLY STEAMROLLER. AND IF YOU PAY A LITTLE MORE YOU CAN PUT A WATER BOTTLE HOLDER AND WATER BOTTLE ON IT TOO. YOU SHOULD BUY A SURLY STEAMROLLER AND RIDE IT. AND THEN YOU'LL KNOW THAT THEY'RE REALLY GOOD BIKES AND YOUR BIKE IS ONLY OK. MY SURLY STEAMROLLER IS BETTER THAN OK. AND IT HAS A WATER BOTTLE HOLDER. AND SOMETIMES A WATER BOTTLE. SO THERE.

So I'm pretty new to the bike scene here in Minneapolis and it seems that people are in love with Surlys here. Can someone please explain to me why Surlys are so expensive? Is it just brand recognition? I mean seriously a long haul trucker is over a $1200, for what? It has 26" wheels fenders and a rack, that's not real impressive. And what's the single speed they sell for like $800 (steamroller?), that's a joke in my opinion, it only has one gear! Ha what a rip off (cost about $20 to covert any road bike to a single speed). It seems to me Surlys are for people with disposable income that want to try and impress their friends (at least here in Minneapolis). I've been riding vintage bikes for years, never paid more than $300 for a road or mountain bike and I'm pretty sure I can ride circles around the average Surly commuter that paid three or four times as much for their bike.

BUT maybe I'm wrong and Surly are made from some rare alloy only available on the moon or something that magically make the riders twice as fast and magically removes their beer gut while riding.

Just a question.. don't hurt me mr surly enthusiast with lots of disposable income :-/

(ok I may be falling marketing ploy to get me to say positive things about Surly, oh well)

Regardless of what Bike Scene you came from or currently reside, do think that a Surly Long Haul Trucker is overly expensive at $1200.00? I think you might be out of touch with the bike scene.

You are comparing a new bike equipped for touring with a used cobbled together from the parts bin "vintage" bike. Sorry, Apples and Oranges.

If you want to compare, Google Bruce Gordon or Indy Fab and look at those Touring Builds and see if you still think the LHT appears expensive.

As far as riding "circles around anyone", and a test of your connection to the Bike Scene, who said....., "Its Not About the Bike". ??? No Google help, can you answer this off the top of your head?

And as demonstration, please load you "Vintage" single speed with 60-80 pounds of gear and ride it to a ocean of your choice and see what a "great" experience you have. I expect the LHT will be looking like a bargain long before you stop seeing corn fields.

Allow me to ease the pursuit of knowledge this thread can lead to when properly digested.

A good custom frame is one that is handbuild by a master craftsman. They can take anywhere from 30-120 hours to go from concept to ready-to-roll. Don't expect to find a frame for triple digits.
"Campy" is shorthand for the Italian component manufacturer Campagnolo, who's complete Super Record gruppo retails for over $3,100, or about 2.5 Long Haul Truckers. At that point, you've still only purchased the drivetrain, and still need to buy a frame, wheels, and half the other components.

Indy Fab is short for Independent Fabrications. There's a multitude of brands that could be added to the list, but I'll quickly mention local deep custom steel frame maker Peacock Groove, local classic road bike maker Chris Kvale, Chris King's Cielo brand, and the custom-optional, titanium Moots brand. Maybe Vanilla Cycles, too, who's waiting list is several years long.

I love my Surly Crosscheck. It is my reason for living. I bought in in 2005 for 800$. It was a 2004 close out model. I was working as a bus boy at the time and this was a lot of "disposable income" for me to spend at the time. I have certainly gotten my money out of this bike. People like Surly's, Liquid vibe, because they are really high quality bikes for a very affordable price. Not the fastest bikes around but durable, well designed, versital etc. I find it odd that you think 800$ to 1200$ is a lot to spend on a bike.If you want to see what kind of "disposable income" "Consumers" are spending on bicycles these days read Bicycle Magazine to see what a carbon fiber racing road bike is going for.
All that being said...

Well you get an A++ for Chutzpah and Moxie. New to the Minneapolis "Bike Scene" and the first thing you do is talk shit about Surly's ? Awesome! Way to stir shit up.
The fact is I've always envied guys like you who can make your own bad ass bikes out of cheap old frames and spare parts.
You know what ? You're right Surly sucks! So does All City. Welcome to the Minneapolis "Bike Scene". I look forward to many more provocative posts from you.
