The Star Tribune isn't the only media outlet that reports whether or not cyclists were wearing helmets after an accident occurred. Beisdes, it sounds as if the police were feeding them the info. The media report auto accidents the same way--they always report whether or not occupants of vehicles were wearing seat belts: http://www.startribune.com/local/147490795.htmlor http://www.startribune.com/politics/statelocal/145938675.html

dasunt wrote: Strib reports no lights, riding against traffic when hit. Ugh. So many things wrong. I wouldn't blame bad timing. Bicyclist should have had a front light. And shouldn't have been riding against traffic. But at the same time, the existence of a nearby sidewalk does not necessarily create a alternative safer path. Nor does the lack of a helmet mean the fatality was his fault. That's what I was afraid of (no lights and wrong way). I would like to see more education on bike safety for bikers. Two of the metro-area bike-fatalities in 2012 have had the same issues.

The safe cycling courses and LCI's to teach them exist already. I don't like selling fear with Smart Cycling or ambulance-chasing to create training sessions, but it would be great if ANYBODY with connections to grade schools and high schools would help push to get these kind of courses offered. You can PM me if you want more information to collaborate on something for your school.

I'll chime in with didn't have a front light and was riding against traffic. I feel more sorry for the driver that hit him. He/she will have to live with that the rest of their life.

I'm ok with that statement, because it relates to the reality of what happened. What I object to is mindless piling-on with "wasn't wearing a helmet" when that was actually irrelevant - it's classic Blame The Victim, a game which the media loves to play.

I grew up on Plymouth rd. Less than 2 miles from there, 1st grade at Burwell when they closed it down and reopened it almost 25 years later.
What you don't know is several pedestrians have died at that intersection. And the state has been lobbying for more street lights along shady oak rd for as long as I have been alive (40 yrs).
What's strange is the obscene amount of drunken and drivenness in that neighborhood. No bar way within miles. Yet rural County roads with bars match that intersection for roadkill and human fatalities.
That intersection is the reason I left minnetonka as a kid, despite my favorite classmates living near there. All of which were prisoners in there home, that and after noon sports.
I'd never raise a child in minnetonka. The mgm liquor store just up the road on highway 7 sells 5 times more booze than the second most profitable liquor store in the state.
Minnetonka has virtually no sidewalks, and has amongst the highest pedestrians fatalities.. The local mpd has the lowest breathalyzer rates in the state for motorists accidents, entirely relies on blood tests days afterwards; usually prompted by motorists hmo.

My dad had a brother in law who worked.as a vice warden at a local prison. The mpd would NOT inform my dad who was a sex offender living down the block, but my uncle had no problem sharing the information. You'd be surprised what doesn't hit the news. Ever wonder why so few 5 point bucks exist/live in Minnetonka? It isn't the golf course herbicides!

Any 60+ year old man who has read the works of Walden and Thoreau should be forced to reside in Minneapolis by force and never to walk in minnetonka again.
Just saying!

It isn't the golf course herbicides! Your uncle had the internet? Access to a phone, a union members list and all those training seminars that other prison personnel had to attend. It's called networking. Before the internet.

Just saying! I'm not sure I get the point *confused* if you had read the works of either and attempting to walk the shoulder of shady oak road, you would understand the inspiring suggestions of their tomes would get you killed. Home owners fetching their mail and/or newspaper have been plowed into by passing motorists on the curb of shady oak road. None of which hits the news media.
