A co-worker of mine got hit last Friday night I think at about 2:30 am. The guy in the car blew stoplight on Lyndale and Franklin. My friend flew over the hood, and then the person in the car drove off. He broke his collarbone in three places, and probably wonâ??t be able to work for weeks (he is a waiter). There were a bunch of witnesses, and thankfully they got the plate numbers, though I donâ??t think they have found the guy yet. Thought I would just post this up. I keep hearing really bad stories about people getting hit lately. We all need to be extra careful and strap on the helmets.

That's lame, but very fortunate he got the license number of the car. It does seem like a lot of accidents are happening now that the good weather has come.
Well, hope he has a speedy recovery. Rock on.

Sorry to hear about that.
I hope they can bring the driver to justice.

Ugh. Sorry to hear this.
I guess it's time to start wearing the helmet again. Yeesh.

yeah, i bought a 120 dollar helmet after an incident last fall, hoping that spending the cash would guilt me into wearing it, and then somehow, i still have the hardest time wearing it.

I have just the idea:
Lie down on some pavement, sans helmet.
Smack your head against the ground, really f*cking hard,
or even just give it a tap. Then put on your helmet, and
get on your bike and ride away. Feel how fun it is to
still be able to ride?
I've hit my head on pavement really f*cking hard,
with a helmet on, after flying through the air and off my bike.
It was the loudest smack and echo that my ears and brain
have experienced. I've done this twice, and my helmet
cracked, but I came away without stitches, lacerations,
or concussions, or even bruising to my head or face.
If you don't have health insurance, wearing a helmet can
save you a lot of money. Even if you do, stitches and an
emergency room visit can get expensive. Just sayin'.

Three weeks after I bought my first helmet ever (after riding three years without one) I got cut off by an SUV and broke my helmet on it. I still suffered a minor concussion, and broke my bike.
I'm DAMN glad I had the helmet on. Without it I might have wound up in the hospital, or even dead. I don't ride without one these days (although it took me way too long to get a new one after I broke the old one).

You could spend some time at the hospital visiting Badger......

This must have been fairly recently. I'm used to seeing you wearing a cycling cap, but the photo I have of you checking your tire for glass on the greenway last week shows you helmeted.
My HID light is currently out of commission for a warranty-covered repair, but I usually have it permenantly affixed to my helmet. It helps me remember to grab the helmet because I usually will be needing the light for after dark, and the two are kind of attached... Here's the view that oncoming traffic is treated to:
I'm getting really excited that Ben is so close to waking up! I hope his family and GF will be there when he regains consciousness to answer the questions he will probably have upon waking up in a hospital after a head injury and a two-week snooze.

Like I said... way too long. Badger was an unhappy reminder of how important it is to have one

The one time I got clipped by a car who turned right as I was on his passenger side I was lucky enough that a good samaritan followed him, honking his horn, for three blocks and made the guy turn around. (He "didn't realize" he had hit me since he was on his cell phone)
That was two blocks from the Minnehaha Hub and I walked over and bought my helmet that day. At first I hated wearing it because I'm hella vain but now I feel naket w/o it.
And on the flip side - I was just told by my friends that they wish they could look so cool in a helmet! Check it!

Just bought a Louis on Wednesday from my boy Atom and AK at the West Bank Hub. I haven't ridden w/o a helmet since street riding in '96 or so.
