Hmm... saw the bridge closed as I left work this evening, then got this email.

Suck!

Quote:
Members of the University Community:

On Friday, August 22, we were informed by officials with Hennepin
County than an engineering analysis of the Washington Avenue bridge's
pedestrian deck revealed some safety concerns on the outer portions of
the bridge. As a precaution, the county, in cooperation with the
University, is closing the upper deck's outdoor areas and all
pedestrians and bicyclists will be limited to a portion of the middle
section of the inside of the upper deck.
The lower bridge deck will
remain open but is currently restricted to handle only legal weight
vehicles.

It goes without saying that this will pose a challenge for pedestrians
and bicycles using the bridge, particularly as we begin the 2008-09
school year. We are working closely with Hennepin County and traffic
safety officials to protect the safety of our community, ensure
adequate pedestrian and bicycle movement and restore the bridge to
full operation as soon as possible.

The University is grateful to the county for working so quickly to act
on this matter. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your
patience during this time.

Whoa! Talk about a giant fucking disaster!

They should start an emergency "earn your civil engineering degree with the suggestion that gets this fixed by September" program.

I noticed this tonight too, and awkwardly rode through the covered section to get through. I was hoping this was for regularly-scheduled maintenance or something; I'm feeling mixed reactions to the real reason...
pessimist - can't this city/state/county maintain their friggin' bridges?
optimist - well, at least ped and bike infrastructure is getting inspected and repaired too
conspirist - hmm, is this related to the LRT corridor debate?
apathist - meh, I'll just take the stone arch bridge next week.

Oops, I just cross posted this in route planning. I take this bridge to work everyday so needless to say this could end up getting really annoying especially with the influx of students arriving shortly now that school is almost back in session.

Star-Tribune also has an article on this. Needless to say its annoying to take the middle since it has doors.

I ate at Al's Breakfast with my sis this morning, and encountered the closed bridge situation. It's not the first time I've ridden through the middle section, but it's the first time I've been directed to do so, and also the first time with a passenger on the Big Dummy. She hopped off and opened the doors for me at each end, and we did lots of slaloming around the poles as we crossed the mostly deserted bridge.

I think I'll whip up some door wedges with my band saw and prop a few doors open at each end.

Yeah, they make it sound like it could be that way awhile, too. I'm hoping they just take a couple doors off on each side.

We tried, but the Dummy handles pretty precariously at door-ramming speeds when there is a passenger on back. With the Pugsley, I can just crash into the doors at about 5mph and they bounce open. :D

not happy about this. i say they're really asking for it, cuz when classes are in session the top of the bridge gets pretty crammed WITHOUT closing 3/4 of it. sheesh. plus, they always have interior club/org bridge painting towards the beginning of fall sememster. i'm gonna bet that they'll either a) cancel it or b) make the bridge-crossers' lives that much more miserable. the former somehow sounds more feasible/likely, methink.

I work at Coffman, which arranges that. It's definitely not being canceled.
